The planned Special Issue of MGR would like to resume the issue of urban agriculture and
investigate and discuss it from a geographical perspective and in a wider context of the urban space transformation and renewal and the agricultural restructuring and multifunctionality.
The aim of the Special Issue is to cover and evaluate the current state-of-the-art in the research conducted in many European countries in this field. Papers analysing the
development of urban agriculture from a spatial perspective, mapping the current trends and challenges, and comparative studies covering more regions are welcome. A contribution of urban agriculture to the sustainable urban development, multifunctional or edible landscapes and green infrastructures, and to actual current societal challenges are especially welcome.
Suggested topics for the Special Issue include, e.g.,
- theoretical background and framing of the urban agriculture in the European perspective,
- mapping urban agriculture trends and current challenges in European countries or
selected regions, - relation between urban agriculture and city planning, especially green infrastructure,
- contribution to cultural heritage, biodiversity and climate change alleviation,
- urban-rural linkages of farming,
- urban agriculture case studies (regional analyses and spatial interactions),
- environmental, economic, social and functional aspects of urban agriculture: models, analysis, spatial visions, critical approaches.

2. Urban Agriculture, en Nature and Culture
As part of COST ACTION TD1106 (Urban Agriculture Europe, 2012-2016) academics and
practitioners from across Europe have collated and reviewed key aspects of Urban Agriculture including governance structures, policy initiatives, spatial planning, territorial
mapping, economic, social and cultural impacts. The work of the COST ACTION TD1106
has produced a rich seam of data which we believe can be analyzed and written up in the
form of a series of articles that would be of interest to academics, public policy practitioners, urban agriculture advocates and the general public who want to know more about urban agriculture initiatives in Europe, their spatial development, ecological practices, economic contributions, social impacts and cultural imprint on the land.
The editors of Nature & Culture have expressed an interest in a set of papers which address the thematics outlined below.
- Understanding urban agriculture from the ground up: local innovation in comparative perspective (based on analysis of selected reference regions drawing on particular on case studies).
- The role of civil society in the urban agriculture sector in Europe (drawing on a select
number of reference regions to explore this theme and provide illustrative examples) - The role of urban agriculture in promoting green infrastructure (focus on innovation and success in the sector).
- Comparison of Urban Agriculture in Europe and in other spatial contexts such as North
America and Asia - Urban agriculture, heritage and the cultural landscape
